Research Paper

Individual Research Report (3,000 words)

compare and contrast a political leader from two different jurisdictions, past or present. (Vladimir Putin and Barak Obama)
analyse the following aspects of leadership in the report:
• What leadership styles are evident in the behaviours and actions of the chosen leaders?
• To what extent did/do contemporaneous circumstances (ideologies, beliefs, popular feelings and so on) influence the particular leaders’ rise to power?
• What are the similarities and differences of these leaders and to what extent are these a result of different times/cultures?
• What lessons can we learn from the past/different cultures for political leadership in the present?
• What leadership lessons have you learnt from your analysis of your chosen leaders?

Criteria Ratings Pts
Presentation
Presentation includes spelling, grammar, scholarly formatting, appropriate use of and quality of references and referencing, sentence structure, punctuation, written expression, and use of clear language. Spelling and grammatical errors and errors in referencing will result in a lower grade for this criterion as these are fundamental errors that can be addressed by simple proofreading and editing, rudimentary skills that are required at this level of education. 10 Pts

Report format and structure of analysis
A bare pass might include an assessment of the leadership styles with little analysis beyond the actions of the leader. Higher marks may be awarded where the student thinks carefully about the structure of the report and weaves the discussion into a logical framework and uses criteria (that you developed from the literature) to assess the leaders and draw your conclusions, rather than just describing the relevant leadership outcomes. 10 Pts

Answering the question
An adequate answer to the question requires an analysis of each question and an attempt by the student to grapple with the elements of each question in relation to the leaders under examination. This includes drawing on examples from the relevant debates, but higher marks may be awarded where a student goes beyond what is obvious in the debate alone and brings in personal insights and critical thinking from further reading. 10 Pts

Research
To achieve a higher grade, students are expected to conduct further reading and research on the topic, and relate the content of the leadership debates to this additional research. Connecting the research literature, particularly from relevant journal articles and other scholarly works, to the analysis of and answer to each question may result in higher marks being awarded. Generally, an adequate response supported by non-scholarly Internet articles will attract a much lower grade. 10 Pts

Introspection and self-reflection
This includes effective and critical analysis of self and evidence of understanding generally-accepted approaches to self-reflection and developing self-knowledge in relation to personal practice, experiences, and goals. A bare pass will simply describe the lessons learnt from the leaders’ practices. Higher marks will be awarded for work that demonstrates and connects this reflective practice to the student’s research and draws upon one’s own experiences in drawing lessons from the research conducted into the chosen leaders’ lives, circumstances, practices, outcomes, and so on. 10 Pts
