Nursing education is experiencing significant limitations in the availability of clinical experiences, particularly those where one faculty member can simultaneously supervise 6-8 students. At the same time, amazing advances have been made in the technology of human simulators. Learning laboratory based human simulation assignments with high fidelity human simulators are being used extensively in nursing education. The laws of many states have caught up with this phenomenon. In light of what you learned about human simulation and the legal requirements for registered nurse pre-licensure instruction, read the following case situation. Develop a guide for the activities of facilitators for the simulation. You are a member of the faculty of an RN pre-licensure program. Within the advanced medical-surgical course, student experience limited opportunities to provide care to a patient who is evidencing symptoms of a myocardial infarction. To assure that every student has the opportunity to design care for this population of patients, you faculty group is developing a simulation focusing on the nursing care of a patient with unstable angina who is exhibiting signs and symptoms of clinical change suggesting progression toward myocardial infarction. As a member of the faculty team you are assigned to develop the Guide for Facilitators of Human Simulations for the simulation. Quickly you recognize that the Guide could be adapted to future human simulations that are sure to be developed for the curriculum. Develop as a checklist and post the Guide as a template for this and additional simulations. Describe improvements you would suggest in narrative format for future use based on possible criteria. For example, what may or may not have worked when you participated in a simulation during nursing school? Would you propose a smaller group size, more faculty present, etc? Note: in addition to the legal requirements, please review the INACSL Standards of Best Practice: Simulation in preparation for this Assignment. Focus on the third article in the series INACSK Standards of Best Practice: Simulation Facilitation (begins on page 12 of the pdf). Rubric: Guide for Facilitators of Human Simulations is completed and can be used for situation provided. You may write a few paragraphs with directions to be included with guide and checklist. Guide is shown to be adaptable for additional human simulations. Recommendations are presented. This may be explained in paragraph form with an adaptable guide. Checklist is clear and Guide is in a template form. Describe improvements you would suggest in narrative format for future use based on possible criteria. For example, what may or may not have worked when you participated in a simulation during nursing school? Would you propose a smaller group size, more faculty present, recording and viewing simulation after completion, etc?
