• Gather information from primary and secondary sources to conduct in depth research into the rise and fall of psychosurgery and relate it to modern paradigm of clinical values, ethics, and approaches towards psychiatric management.
o Discuss the history of psychiatric intervention throughout the years and highlight developments in the history of psychosurgery
o Familiarize with the concept of psychosurgery exploring lobotomies- procedure, purpose, clinical indication, reversibility, side effects, and when is it considered successful
o Analyse the risks and benefits of psychosurgery
o Investigate controversy that envelops psychosurgery
o Propose an explanation for the decline of leucotomies

o History of psychiatric interventions looking into what available psychiatric treatments and interventions they had at the same (talking therapy, ECT, trepanning, insulin shock therapy, malarial therapy, deep sleep therapy)
– Body 2: Initiation of psychosurgery and reasons behind it- (patient trajectory, overall trajectory- enthusiasm for radical interventions at the time)
– Body 3: Factors affecting psychosurgical interventions (individual complications like the technical inconvenience of the procedure itself, the change in context in the framework of psychiatry as a whole after the introduction of psychiatric drugs)
Discussion
– Success and failure of psychosurgery- 1-case studies (individual patient cases where they either failed or succeeded) and then 2- more general level why society deemed it a success and then why it was deemed a failure (argue against Pressman’s Last resort)
– Also briefly discuss some criticizing made by physicians at the time like Donald Winnicott to explore whether it was seen as ethical at the time or not
