Analytical Papers: Each student is responsible for writing three short analytical papers. These papers are based on the outside readings, class lecture, and if
indicated supplemental material. Use of internet sources as a substitute for the assigned material will result in a failing grade for the assignment.
Guidelines for the Homework Assignment: Papers must be typed, double spaced, and have the students name, the class name, and section number, on the
top left hand side of the first page. Please use 12 point type and one inch margins. Do NOT start your paper halfway down the first page. If you utilize a direct
quotation from the book you need only place it in quotation marks and list the page number in parenthesis after it.
So for example a quote should be formatted in the following way:
“While the minting of silver was increasing in Europe that of gold was developing in Africa.” (40)
***Failure to cite the page number in a direct quotation will result in a grade penalty. You need only cite page numbers for direct quotations.
Always try to be as detailed and specific as possible; give names, dates, specific examples whenever possible to support your arguments and help the reader
to understand your major points. When citing an individual for the first time always gives full name. Keep yourself out of the paper. Historians are interested
in analysis NOT an opinion. Be objective and dispassionate in your analysis. Focus on what the material is telling you about that particular event not your
emotional reaction to it. PROOF READ AND SPELLCHECK. A sloppy, poorly edited paper makes for a difficult read and will hurt your grade. Unexcused late
papers will be reduced the equivalent of one full letter grade.
Third Writing Assignment: After reading Jenks, Cosmonaut Who Couldn’t Stop Smiling, answer the following questions:
-Compare and contrast Yuri Gagarin’s actual space flight with the Soviet Union’s official story line. In particular, analyze how the Soviets used their space
program to present an image of the communist state to the world.
-Andrew Jenks argues that Yuri Gagarin’s image reflected the anxieties about Russia’s place in the modern world and that Gagarin attempted to project
himself as a model Soviet Icon. Identify these anxieties and explain what Jenks means by “Homo Sovieticus.”
-Analyze how the circumstances surrounding Yuri Gagarin’s death, and the conspiracy theories about it, reflected the fears and cynicism of Russian society in
the late Soviet era and into Perestroika
