Forms of Narrative Analysis

(1200-1500 words) Assignment Analyze key differences between Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813), Laurence Sach’s graphic novel adaptation of
Pride and Prejudice (2013), and a film version of Pride and Prejudice. You may base your analysis on an individual key moment and how that moment is
similar/different in the three narrative forms; alternatively, you may write about a broader topic that spans the duration of the work, e.g., the portrayal of a
character. As each form of narrative varies, think about what is said and what is left out of the differing versions of Austen’s story. What are the differences
between the prose form of the nineteenth-century novel, the graphic novel, and film? Who is the intended audience for each? How do such constraints as
running/screen time, or the length of the graphic novel affect the success of the adaptations? What have reputable reviewers and commentators said about
the forms of narrative? While you do not necessarily have to answer these questions in your writing, you should consider them when developing your
argument. If you need help understanding comics, Scott McCloud’s book, Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art would be a good place to start. To support
your argument, you must reference at least three secondary sources in your essay, preferably academic books or peer reviewed journal articles. Your essay
must be a minimum of 1200 words, excluding headings and bibliographic information. At the end of your essay, please include the word count. Film
Adaptations of Pride and Prejudice While there are many film versions of Pride and Prejudice, I ask that you view one of the following, all of which are
available on reserve at Proctor Library. Pride and Prejudice. Directed by Simon Langton. BBC, 2001. Pride and Prejudice. Directed by Joe Wright. Focus
Features and Universal Pictures, 2005. Pride and Prejudice. Directed by Cyril Coke. CBS Fox and BBC, 2010.
Notes on Good Academic Writing Good evidence-based argument writing consists of a thesis (a clear statement of your argument), claims (the smaller
steps of the logical argument), evidence (text in support), and explanation. The idea is to move away from both (a) simply expressing opinions on your
feelings, into making arguments about text that can be substantiated with evidence/text (and debated with other arguments according to an examination of
-2- text); or (b) writing summaries of texts that simply restate what they already say, rather than make an argument that analyzes what they say and how they
say it. Remember to include an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion in your essay. You are encouraged to proofread your essay before you
submit it for evaluation, striving for coherence, grammatical correction, and good transitions. First drafts rarely hold up to critical scrutiny.
