E- Marine Engineering

Introduction
This coursework is to be carried out individually. It is divided into three questions designed to meet
the Learning Outcomes of this module, as presented in the module specification, i.e.:
Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply design methodology utilising suitable software to analyse marine components and
systems.
2. Debate the application of different types of ship propulsion plant and identify the advantages
and disadvantages of alternative propulsion systems.
Details of the task
Using the standard title page format, carefully answer each of the below questions. Recall that your
work should follow the Department’s formal writing guidelines. Your work should be word-processed
and contain a maximum of 2,000 words (each question should not be more than 500 words).
Your answers should contain information from credible sources, which need to be properly cited and
referenced, under the University’s accepted referencing formats (see link below). It is expected that
you will have at least five cited sources of information. References will not count towards the word
count.
Shipboard Systems and Maritime Organisations
1. Describe in detail the different types of conventional ship propulsion plants, underlining the
vessels commonly fitted with each type of plant and citing any advantages and disadvantages
related to each, and lastly including diagrams of the main items for the following:
a. Direct diesel engine drive
b. Geared diesel engine drive with controllable pitch propellers
c. Traditional diesel electric drive.
2. Mention and briefly describe two alternative propulsion system different from the previously
highlighted, whilst including any advantages and/or disadvantages.
3. In no more than a paragraph each, explain the purpose of the following maritime organisations:
a) International Maritime Organization (IMO)
b) Classification Societies (such as Lloyd’s Register)
c) Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
4. Discuss the concept of engine room simulators, stating the potential advantages and
disadvantages. What basic knowledge would you expect a student to have before gaining any
benefit from using a simulator (knowledge of systems, some sea time, etcetera)?Marking and feedback
Your assignment will be checked for malpractice using the plagiarism detection software: “Turnitin”.
It is therefore vital that you correctly cite and reference any material that you use.
Your assignment will be marked directly through “Turnitin” using a rubric that is based on the mark
sheet detailed on the next page. Comments and annotations will be made directly within the Canvas’
SpeedGrader®, which can be accessed after the marking deadline.
