Comparing Databases in a Search for Scholarly Empirical Research

Using Databases Assignment (file upload assignment–MS. Word).
Module Learning Outcome: Demonstrate the ability to use library databases to find and report on scholarly information. Report your findings in a 750-1,000
word essay using APA style. Be sure to produce an essay–do not list.
Instructions: Read all instructions and background information before you begin. Your essay must explain what databases are, and how they differ from
journals. You must show that you know how to conduct a search with more than one database, and compare some of the results of the search. You must
also show that you know how to identify information in journal articles. I have included a checklist for you below. Be aware that errors and incomplete or
inaccurate information will be penalized.
Reminder: be sure to watch the YouTube video on the difference between articles, journals, and databases before you complete this assignment as you will
need to refer to its content in your essay.
1. Read the Module page on FSCJ databases and watch the YouTube video on databases before you begin. Read this handout on reading social science
journal articles (Links to an external site.). Read this article on how to read scientific articles (from an engineering perspective). (Links to an external site.)
2. Create a correctly formatted title page for the assignment which will precede the essay. You will also need a correctly formatted reference page for any
sources you cite in the essay. Incorporate the following information in the essay.
a. Use the Search feature on the library’s database list Databases–What are they and how do I use them? to locate PsychArticles, JSTOR and Medline
databases. Make a note of how each database describes its content and focus. You will use this information in the essay.
b. Next, use the search function in each database to locate articles on qualitative research methods. Narrow your search to the years 2015-2021. Be sure to
enter the search term in quotation marks like this: “qualitative research methods.”
c. Note the number of results you obtain using those search terms for each database.
d. Next, examine the result to see if there is any overlap. Note whether the search terms you used produced any duplication of articles in the list (check only
the first 3 entries on each list). How many duplicates are there, if any? What are the names of the journals that published the top three articles in each
database?
e. Explain why you see or do not see an overlap of results (hint–refer back to the focus of each database).
f. Select the first article listed by each database, and create an APA-style reference for each one to include in your list of references.
g. In your essay, identify the research question and method for each of the studies. Be sure to note the database that indexed the article. How similar or
different are the research questions and the methods used to explore the research question? Please note that qualitative methodology includes ethnography,
participant observation, focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and content analysis. Do you see a connection between the type of research question and
method to the focus of the database? Why or why not?
The Professor stated the following should be included.
* Thesis Statement
* Better Introduction
* Cite Information
* Use Keywords
* More Database Information
