C​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍​h 1 Discussion – Practice Sequence: Reflection Activities Before starting this discussion, read pages 16-21 in our textbook. Note how Greene and Lidinsky describe their steps for collecting information (research), drafting and organizing what you’ve researched, and revising your ideas based on what you learned from sharing your ideas with others (16-18). Then carefully examine Jackie Gersteins’ cycle of questions for learning to understand how “reflection in writing can focus on different types of knowledge” (Greene and Lidinsky 19-20). This is important to understand before writing your own reflections. Once you are done with your notes, follow the “Steps to Reflection” to complete part 1 of the “Practice Sequence: Reflection Activities.” Then for part 2, ignore what the book says ​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍​to do. Instead, watch the video excerpt (below) of National Book Award-winning author and journalist, Ta-Nehisi Coates, speaking to West Point Cadets about the writing process. Write notes about what Coates says about writing and his own reflections. Then compare these notes to what you learned from doing part 1 and compare that to what you learned from Coates, especially about ideas that are new to you. Post your thoughtful and detailed reflections into this discussion, but don’t put all your ideas into one paragraph. Separate your ideas into separate paragraphs responding to part 1 and separate paragraphs responding to part 2. You can earn up to 10 points for the detailed and thoughtful reflections for part 1. You can earn another 10 points for your detailed comparisons and thoughtful reflections about part 2​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍​.
