Book Review and Discussions
Given the wide variety of topics, writers’ styles and content of our selected books, there is no one set of questions that can be all inclusive or applicable to all the books. This discussion is not a simple recitation of the facts in the book or a book report of the contents, rather it is an analysis of the contents of the book. As you read, consider these general questions:
1. Author
A. What is the background (personal and professional) of the author?
B. What is the relationship of the author to the subject? For example, does the author write from inside or outside the group, cross culture interpretations, social class, etc
C. What is the perspective of the author? Do you recognize an agenda, biases or missing content?
2. Analysis
A. What are the many themes and issues that can you identify as impacting the individual(s) and their families?
B. What are the contextual factors?
C. What is the impact of culture, physical environment, ethnic identity, gender identity, gender expectations, heterosexual norms and abilism, just to name a few of the potential influences?
D. Are there injustices that negatively impact the individuals?
