Interdisciplinary Hospital Ethics Committees first emerged here in the United States, and are endorsed by both the American Medical Association and the
American Hospital Association. Among the responsibilities of ethics committees are guiding hospital policies and making recommendations in individual
patient cases. Hospitals also have a responsibility to educate not only the members of the committee, but also patients and staff about ethical issues
(Hajibabaee et al., 2016). Now that you have participated in the interdisciplinary team planning care for Shawn, imagine you are submitting an application to
become a member of your hospital’s ethics committee. Consider what you have learned as you identify and articulate your qualifications for this position.
