

*Critical Analysis RESEARCH (1250-2000 words): An analytical essay exploring a concept in literature from selected perspectives (topic selections will be
provided on short story index). The student should engage with the literary work and also be persuasive in their approach by guiding the reader to come to a
similar conclusion. If the student fails to reach the word count the paper will receive an automatic F grade. Students who do not pass this essay with a D
grade or better will not pass RHT102.
Step by step instructions to write this essay
Ideas + Form are both important. Try not to be so overwhelmed and engaged with the content that you forget to pay attention to the format and structure.
Choose a short story from the index list only. No other story choices are permitted. If a link from the index isn’t working, search for the story using the title
and author’s name
Read your story multiple times so that you are as familiar as possible with the plot and details
Learn about the author and give relevant details about your author’s life
Learn about the time period the story was written in and why the author wrote this particular story
Learn about the time period that the story takes place in. Why would the author make the particular setting choices they did?
Give a summary of your story plot and introduce any main characters or story arc

1 must have some connection to your approach
1 must be about either your short story or your short story’s author or both
1 must be about the time in history when the story was written (and using WIKIPEDIA!)
