As this is an open-book assignment, I am expecting answers that are thorough and rich with examples and details. You should explain any example or term thoroughly. Imagine if you are writing for a relative who is educated but knows very little about the topic of this class. Organize them as you would an essay with an introduction, body and conclusion. There is no word minimum or maximum—just answer the questions to the best of your ability.
The entire paper needs to be written in your words and you should be able to write it based on resources provided through class. Any evidence of plagiarism and you will fail this assignment.
You should be able to complete this exam based on the class material though you might have to find examples. You are welcome to use any of the films I have posted as well.
1. Read this assignment before starting.
2. Answer two of the following questions (worth 10% each) in a Word document. They are on Page 2 of this document
3. 5% is earned for following the correct formatting for the paper, the AAA style guide and formatting and using citations and references correctly. These references need to be complete and might require some research to find all the information.

How to Do Your Best
1. Follow the directions!
2. Think about doing outside research and properly paraphrasing/citing your research.
3. Correctly cite your sources (AAA style) and do not plagiarism.
4. Use the resources listed on Moodle.
5. Proofread your paper!
This is an exam. I will be available next week during regular office hours to talk about the questions but I will not be reading drafts.
Choose TWO of the following:
1. Music and Dance: Thinking like a dance and music anthropologist, read and watch all the material given to you about music and dance on Moodle.
a. Define dance—what are some of the theoretical issues with using the word dance?
b. Why are anthropologists interested in music and dance? What can these tell a researcher about a cultural group? Make sure to include at least one detailed example.
c. Choose an event from YouTube that depicts a cultural event featuring music and/or dance (make sure you include this in your citation list). If you were conducting fieldwork on music and dance, describe how you would conduct your fieldwork? How would you collect your data and what kind of data would you like to collect? What could be some challenges?
2. Everyday art and art in a museum
a. Define everyday art based on the definitions found in the article about Japanese mingei. What is the history and philosophy behind these ideas? Make sure to describe some examples.
b. Compare and contrast everyday art with art you might find in a Western style museum. What is the function of art in a museum? What are the point of museums? Give examples.
c. Describe what you have learned from the discussion of everyday art. Has this topic changed how you approach the objects you use and live with? Give examples whether or not it has changed your approach.
