The paper should be 2-3 pages long, typed and double-spaced, 12-point font, using
parenthetical citation when citing any material in your paper itself, and the full citation
at the end of your paper under “Works Cited” (see example below)
For parenthetical citation you should put either the author’s last name, or, if no author,
the title of the article in parentheses, after you cite the quote or information, in
parentheses, such as: (Johnson) or (“The Bonus Army of 1932”). Be sure to use at least 3
sources, whether internet and/or periodical.
1) What were the veterans’ main grievances?
2) Can you find any particular stories of any of the veterans in the Bonus Army, to use as
an example of who these men were?
3) Why was their peaceful march on Washington, D.C. met with violence by the U.S.
military, after President Herbert Hoover ordered their removal? What was the immediate
outcome, and why did Hoover act as he did?
4) By contrast, how did these World War I veterans fare under Hoover’s successor, FDR?
5) Finally, what did the two very different responses reveal about each approach, in terms
of each president’s effectiveness in addressing the veterans’ needs, and either inflaming
or soothing a sad and desperate situation?
A good source to start with would be this one, put out by the US Govt’s National Park
