Formatting Guidelines for Papers
Research papers are due April 12. 2019
All papers turned in for this class must adhere to the following guidelines. No exceptions.
Your paper must adhere to the following format:
 Font: 12-point, Times New Roman
 Margins: 1 inch on all sides, left-aligned. This will require that you go into the settings of
your word processor and adjust them from 1.25 inches to 1 inch. In Microsoft Word this is
under File>Page Setup along menu bar at the top of the program.
 Double-spaced, no extra lines between paragraphs.
 Ink: Black
 Footnotes should follow the Chicago Manual of Style
(https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/717/01/) No parenthetical notes.
 No quotes. Summarize and footnote.
 No first-person.
 Pages must be stapled
 Pages must be numbered, with page one being the first page of the essay, not the cover page.
 Minimum of 5 sources (three scholarly books, and two scholarly articles found online)
 All online sources must be approved by the instructor (no Wikipedia, biography.com, etc.)
 This is a five-page paper. Anything less will receive an “F.” This means that the first line of
the first page of your paper should begin the writing You should also try to write for a full
paper—a paper that is the minimum plus one line indicates minimalist effort.
I will not accept papers that do not follow the above format, and you will have to take it back and
correct it, handing it in ASAP with a one-grade penalty for each day that it is late.
Writing is the cornerstone of any profession, not just history. But writing is especially important
in history because historians and students must communicate through the written medium. So, I
am willing to read early drafts, help you improve your writing skills, and guide you in whatever
way that I can. I will give a half-letter grade extra credit to students who use the TLC, but must
be documented that you met with a writing center tutor.
