In the poem “Untitled” by writer James Baldwin. He is asking the lord to take it easy on him with the rain. It’s a rather short poem but in a little bit of delimary is a big message and when you read it you’re taken by surprise. I feel like this is a great poem to discuss Initially when I read the poem I didn’t feel anything. I sort of understood the message but I didn’t want to overshoot or stretch my interpretation, so I read it again. After reading a few more times. I was getting the message clear and I felt a sullenness come over me.
This reading had put me in a place of deep thought where I was now relating my own life to this poem and essentially feeling and asking the same question Baldwin was asking the lord
“Can you please take it easy on me?”

“ Lord, when you send the rain, think about it please ,a little? Do not get carried away by the sound of falling water, the marvelous light on the falling water. I am beneath that water. It falls with great force and the light Blinds me to the light.”

The poem to me is very spiritual in the few words in which it is written.
The way Baldwin uses the rain to describe the lord’s will and at the same time he uses the rain to also describe his pain really spoke to me. The message that really struck me is that,
No matter how beautiful something may seem , or how much we need something.
We can still be hurt from it, the only thing we can do is ask the Lord to have mercy even when the things that hurt us may be a blessing.
James Baldwin’s use of metaphors in this poem really made me understand the process he took when he wrote the poem. I must say I look forward to reading more literature or poems from James Baldwin. I’m impressed with the way he draws me into reading this poem. The selection of words makes me visualize everything that he is saying. I wonder if he was speaking to the lord directly or praying out loud. That is one question I find myself wrestling with. One thing we as humans know for sure is that God’s plan is greater than ours. The lord makes no mistakes having to endure pain and suffering in life does make you wonder why am I experiencing these painful things in my life and when will the pain stop?
Why does God sit and watch horrible things from happening to people and not intervene and stop things before it happens? Is it because he wants us as humans to enjoy our free will ?
My overall thesis is that God will test your faith by letting you experience and endure pain ,
but those pains will eventually heal over time as long as you keep your faith in the lord .
Easier said than done sometimes, there have been plenty of times I have experienced pain physically and mentally that I question my purpose in life from me losing a family to me failing academically in school .
We all have a purpose in life. I often wonder at times why did he create me and how will I be able to fulfill my purpose? God takes things from us to draw us back to him, we forget sometimes that we are blessed to be in the land of the living. I forget to pray some days not realizing the impact prayers have on my life. I get so caught up trying to accomplish my goals I don’t even realize how blessed my life has become.
I had time to reflect and digest my emotions while writing this essay. Part of me feels like God knows my intention. He knows my flaws and yet still puts me through the test. The other part of me feels he is just testing my faith to see If I’m willing to give up like the saying goes, God does not give you nothing you can not handle. That statement may be true but when you’re experiencing hard times you tend to forget and appreciate how precious life is being able to leave your house and come back safe is a blessing and also a testimony to God’s grace and mercy. We know the lord gives and he takes things from us such as life and death. The lessons we are taught by God makes us stronger and wiser, no one on earth should expect a perfect life because none of us was born that way.

My final thoughts on this essay is learn to appreciate the things that you have in life. One thing for sure, life is short so spend time with the people you love. Be grateful to God because it is his grace and mercy that we are allowed to experience this thing called life. We as human beings often forget that the gift of life is only temporary tomorrow is not a promise for no one. The most expensive thing that we have is time and each of us are on borrowed time. Time is something we can never go back to, meaning as much as we want to we can not go back in time to change things. Life is full of ups and downs but as long as you’re positive, keep your faith in God, and consistent in your dreams and goals you can change the outcome of your life. Life is a marathon no matter what you go through, good and bad you have to keep jogging at your own pace.
