Aims and learning outcomes The aim of this test is to facilitate students to develop a critical and advanced understanding of how social psychological theory and empirical research has contributed, and is still contributing, to examining and understanding issues that relate to individuals and the society. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this test, on top of the basic learning outcomes described earlier in the Handbook, a student will be able to: 1. Critically evaluate concepts and theories in social psychology 2. Integrate research and theory in approaching complex issues 3. Demonstrate awareness of methodological approaches in social psychology 2. Rationale for assessment This test allows students to demonstrate a breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding in two of the topics from the course. They should be able to draw on the content of the course. Importantly, this assessment will allow scaffolding critical thinking for Level 6. The reason for a take-home is to ensure that all revision is not a wasted exercise as students will only revise topics they that appear in the test, reducing anxiety and increasing ability to focus on the important content. By having one week to work toward this test, students practice time-management and concentrate on conducting appropriate, focused literature searches. 3. Guidelines for the assessment This is a Take-home test: Students will: a. select 3 research articles (from a number of articles suggested by the lecturers) to critique in a concise way (i.e., approx. 300 words each) b. answer 2 questions (from a list of 3) in a concise way (i.e. approx. 600 words each). In the seminars of the module we will go over the guidelines, key areas, as well as tips and guidelines to help with your revision and preparation. For this test, please revise broadly, then focus your work in the final week. Please take into consideration that it will help you to consider the whole course as this is a core subject and crucial for BPS accreditation. Here are some guidelines that will also be covered in an allocated seminar: • You will have a window on 8 hours to submit your test script in Turnitin, • You will be notified when the test is uploaded via a course announcement on Moodle. The test will be included in the announcement and uploaded on Moodle too • You will be able to use the originality report links • You need to include a title page • There will be two sections: one will ask you to critique 3 research articles (approx. 300 words for each article) and one will ask you to answer 2 questions (approx. 600 words each) • Regarding formatting, you can follow the general essay guidelines • You will need in-text references • Late submissions will not be accepted • As this will be an test, once the questions have been made available staff cannot be contacted for help Test answers will be marked in line with the Level 5 standards (see appendices in the Handbook). 4.
