Syllabus Directions
“You simply need to explain what you have learned in this course. The best approach is to write a one-page summary of each week, and then use those summaries as the foundation for your final paper.”

I will provide two of the required text in class, as well as a couple summaries you could use if you wanted; the last is The Autobiography of Malcom X which can easily be found online like on the webpage below…

A brief course description:

We will explore research and important ideas on protests, political deviance, trials, and law. We also will critique the media representations of related ideas. We will focus upon current issues such as those related to moral entrepreneurs, social movements, organizations, the state, and globalization. Initially, we focus upon political deviance (e.g., positive deviance), which ostensibly is deviating for a higher moral good versus deviance, which often is viewed as negative and “selfish”.
We will analyze varied and often confusing justifications for defining action as diversity, deviance, or crime and the reasons for using criminal, civil, or alternative (positive) sanctions (especially via indigenous peoples). Our review will include the encompassing meanings of a protest, political trial and law. Many people throughout the world find everyday life to be a trial, especially those placed on the margins of globalization. We also will expand the research on media, conflict, and trials that usually have been examined narrowly by ostensible media “experts,” and legal institutions and reinforced by hegemony.
You also should be able to critically evaluate various global social movements, political protests, and nascent political trials, and analyze the varied justifications for defining action as diversity, political deviance, deviance, or crime and the reasons for using criminal, civil, or alternative (positive) sanctions. Our final goal is for you to develop the skills to analyze and critique these complicated issues and be able to articulate your own ideas in your final paper.

Include the three main strands:

1.The moral boundary analysis and reasons for a shift
– touch on the elements that shift it…
– Moral Entrepreneurs
– Social Movements
– Organizations
– The “deep state” (illegal government)
2. The application of the moral boundary shift to an important, political deviant, Malcolm X, and
3. The attempt to be political deviants in the Invitation to Globalogy.
