Extra Credit Assignment: Critical Film Response / Global Human Rights
If done properly and thoroughly, this extra credit assignment can be worth three full points added to your
final course grade.
If you choose to do this extra credit assignment, you must post it to the appropriate Blackboard Discussion
Board Forum as a Word or PDF file no later than 10pm, Wednesday, May 13. Please allow plenty of time to
complete this assignment; do not attempt to complete it at the last minute!
Please note
– This extra credit assignment CANNOT be accepted by email.
– All assignments will be automatically filtered through Turnitin.com
– Give your critical film response a TITLE
– EDIT your critical film response carefully for any grammatical/spelling errors
FIRST, you will want to do some preliminary research about the films below in order to determine which one
you find most interesting. You may choose ONE of the following seven films as the basis of your critical
response. Each of the following films is widely available either on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc.:
She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry
Human
The White Helmets
The Dark Side of Chocolate
China Blue
E-Team
Queer Britain
SECOND, you should watch the film carefully, and perhaps multiple times, taking notes as you watch. Pay
attention to the overall plot line, character development, as well as any relevant details – especially those
related to the central ethical dilemma of the film.
THIRD, and most importantly, you will need to write a 3-4 page (double-spaced, 12pt. Times New Roman)
critical response to the film.
The first section of your critical response should begin with an introduction and brief summary of the film’s
plot, characters, etc.
The second section of your critical response should discuss the specific type/kind of human right(s) depicted
in the film: what is the human rights issue and what right/rights are at stake?
The third (and main) section of your critical response should discuss HOW the film implicitly responds to
those who are CRITICAL of human rights.
The fourth (and last) section of your critical response should briefly discuss whether or not YOU agree or
disagree with the way in which the film handled the specific human right(s) controversy. Perhaps you were
impressed with its treatment of the issue, or perhaps you felt it could somehow have handled it more
effectively. Your personal response is very important!
