vAnnotated Bibliography on Nursing Shortages
A shortage of nurses in not only the world but the country is no secret to anyone at this point. There has been a shortage of nurses for a while and now with the pandemic it has gotten so bad that they are sending nursing students to help.
The Idaho Board of Nursing last week announced an apprentice program to move nursing students into hospitals and a temporary emergency license for students who are nearing graduation. AGRAWAL (2020) Sadly, many people love the idea of being a nurse but once they’re there they hate the fact of it. Unfortunately, today there are no high school level electives that teach nursing, and if there were then maybe there would not be such a shortage.
Teenagers everyday grow up with a thought in their mind of what they want to be when they grow up, some kids want to be professional athletes, some kids want to be actors or actresses, and some even want to be the President of the United States. These are all great dreams to have, but what about the kids that have more realistic dreams like becoming a police officer, military, or even a nurse?
You see, the difference in two out of the three realistic careers is that two of them teach courses early on, for the most part. If you as a kid in high school believe that military is the life for you then you can join ROTC, along the way you get to do activities on the weekends with actual armed forces personnel and you get to see first hand what life is like as a member of our armed forces. Kids that are interested in becoming a police officer can go on ride a-longs with actual officers within their community.
These kids get to experience firsthand what it is like to work in the careers that they think they want. Students don’t have very much options when it comes to the medical side. this for students that have an interest. Taking a wide variety of elective courses helps you get a feel for how different fields approach things like problem-solving, and to see where you can put your personal interests and aptitudes to work. STERLING STAFF (2015)
My solution to help the shortage of nurses is to in fact show kids what it is really like to be a nurse. Sitting in a classroom learning about nursing will only help so much, but to be able to create a program where students can see firsthand what nurses deal with on a day in and day out basis would be extremely beneficial in the long run. A day in the life of a nurse is a busy one. Shadow a nurse programs allow prospective nursing students to really see what nursing all is about. (Cronkite)
This would ultimately prepare potential nursing students for the stress and reality that they may have to face when working in the field. This program should allow students to get their CPR certification. The students won’t be able to administer medications or participate in care, but they will be allowed to shadow a nurse and talk to the patients. There are advantages and disadvantages to every career, and I think it’s important for teens to see all aspects before devoting so much time and money into college.
Some people may think of nursing as just helping people, and they want to be that helping hand, but they don’t realize how much actually goes into being a nurse such as time lost with your family, time lost for yourself, dealing with extremely sick patients, and even risking your own health just help someone in need. There are so many advantages of being a nurse as well like the earning potential, flexible hours, always learning new things, traveling the country, and most of all the satisfaction of saving someone’s life.
If we could develop a program as early as high school to help show what nursing truly is all about, then maybe we could cut the loss of nurse along the way. I feel like a lot of high schoolers have an idea of what they want to be, they get half way through a program and figure out that it’s not for them. I think this program could potentially help teenagers get an idea of what nursing actually is before wasting time on another career path that wasn’t for them.
