Netflix has a documentary titled Unnatural Selection that highlights many of the important themes in science that you’ve been introduced to in this class. (Bioethics, scientific research in disease, genetics/heredity, etc.). The documentary also addresses many of the common questions that arise in concerning cures for cancer, genetic disorders and how they should be regulated.
For this extra credit assignment I only require you watch the first episode. I would like you to do the following:
Write a summary (1-2 pages) that addresses each of the following (you should have 2-3 paragraphs, single spaced for each of the bullet points below):
One of the scientists had an idea about how to get rid of a pest problem within a small town. What were the pests and what exactly was his solution? Do you think he should have informed the town of his suggested solution or should he have proceeded without consulting the town?
Would you take treatment/advice from a biohacker who performs research in his backyard? Do you agree or disagree with their philosophy of available genetic treatments for all? Why or why not?
This assignment will be worth 2 homework grades (it will take the place of any missed homework or low scoring homework assignment)
