Instructions for Form & Principles
Introduction: Learning how to explore and apply knowledge of the elements and principles of visual organization to conduct a formal analysis of an artwork is one of
the learning outcomes of this course. This assignment prepares you to write about
the formal elements and the principles of design of an artwork. Please be sure to
read Chapters 3 – 7 and be familiar with the terms in those chapters before completing this assignment.
Learning objectives of this assignment:
Explore and apply knowledge of the principles of visual organization to conduct formal analysis of artworks
Task I: Thumb through your textbook and find an image that appeals to you. You may not use an image from chapter 3 through chapter 7, and you may not select the same painting used in the sample assignment or used as an icon in week 3. (-10 points) This is because the concepts are discussed for those paintings.
Other than those: any chapter, any image. Note that each image will have a caption stating where the work of art is located. Use this information to research the work and/the artist and find an image of the work. Please keep in mind that research is only as good as the source, so be ruthless in your search for reputable information. Two sources are required. Please note Wikipedia should only be considered a secondary source at best.
Task II: Write a short paper (between 350-450 words), including a label (Just like the one in the textbook, in the same format) to place under the image of your chosen work, as detailed below:
In the first paragraph, describe the formal elements the artist uses in the work—line, shape, color, texture, space, value, time/motion…. Then discuss the principles of design—balance, emphasis and focal point, scale and proportion, repetition and rhythm, and unity and variety… Which of the formal elements or principles of design stands out to you and how are they used in the composition? You must use at least 3 terms related to formal elements (chapters 3 – 6) and 2 terms related to principles of design (chapter 7). In this paragraph, be sure you do not talk about subject matter or content.
In an additional paragraph (do not use bullet points), research the artist and artwork briefly. You do not need to go into great detail—just a paragraph worth of highlights. However, you must correctly cite your work, and your work cannot be copied and pasted. It must be in your own words (though you may include a quote, in quotation marks). For guidance on one form of correct citing, view the sample assignment.
Task III: Save your work as a PDF and submit through the submission link. Do not copy and paste your work into the “submission text.”
