The topic is as follows:
As the spread of COVID-19 continues, challenges that the virus poses for governments and markets around the world — including the “emergency” steps that many state and local governments are taking to contain the outbreak, are being examined. One of these emergency steps is “social distancing.” Four weeks ago, I did not even know the term “social distancing,” much less what it meant to practice it. And now, I’m already fed up with it, as I’m sure most of you are. But my family and I will persist for as long as necessary because we put our faith in the doctors and scientists who preach its effectiveness.
However, there have been many who are not following the measures. Governor Cuomo of New York recently stated “[t]here has been a laxness on social distancing, especially over this past [Easter] weekend that is just wholly unacceptable…People are dying. People in the health care system are exposing themselves every day to tremendous risk walking into those emergency rooms, and then they have to go home to their family and wonder if they caught the virus and they’re bringing it home to their family.” As such, governments around the world have begun issuing fines to those who refuse to practice social distancing and shelter-in-place. This has caused controversy for some, especially with regard to implementation. We will examine this practice in the extra-credit module.
