Assignment Paper

The Assignment: In a minimum of 2,000 words, write a complete essay that addresses one of the following prompts. This essay should have a well-developed, 3-level thesis, should include evidence from the text(s) assigned in class to support your thesis, and should feature analysis of the work examined. Additionally, you must find and incorporate at least two academic articles (research) from the DVC Library database.

Option 1: Pick the playwrights covered in class (Tony Kushner : Angels In America Part 1 and Part 2 *attached in files), and describe the social, political, and/or historical context in which s/he wrote. What concerns or ideals did the writer respond to? What issues were important to this author, and what were his/her political and/or social convictions? How are these convictions demonstrated in his/her work?

Option 2: Compare/contrast the historic context in which two of the authors wrote. What issues were important to each? Compare/contrast the way each playwright demonstrates his/her political convictions in their plays. What conclusions can you reach based on your comparison/contrast?

The Research: The academic articles are an opportunity for you to find more information on: the context in which the authors wrote; the topics and themes that are prevalent in their writing; interviews by the authors; literary analysis of their work; and/or the authors’ biographical information. Your research should be integrated into the essay and the connections between background information and your thesis should be clear. Please use one of the databases found here:

NOTE: the research is meant to be background information, and will not necessarily answer the question about the authors’ convictions. That is up to you to answer.

Format: This essay will be in MLA format. This means it will be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font (I prefer Times New Roman), with page numbers and your last name on each page, and a header on the first page. Your title should be original, and you must include a Works Cited page. Be sure to include in-text citations.
