Instructions for First Productivity and Management Paper

Objective: Public administrators need to be able to ensure high levels of productivity from the people who work for them. To do this well they must be good leaders in order to influence positive change in difficult situations.

Stage 1 Steps: Choose a leader from a public agency for the paper.

Do NOT choose a politician, but rather a public manager.

Describe the agency that the public manager is in charge of.

Provide background and history of the leader you are studying.

Stage 2 Steps: Focus on a particular crisis or problem for the leader.
Clear choice of crisis/problem

Describe the problem you have chosen facing the leader and agency.

Discuss how the leader handled the problem.

Explain the type of leadership you think the leader displayed using
concepts from Northouse. You can include more than one type of
leadership approach to carry out your analysis.

Explain the strengths and weaknesses of his/her approach to leadership.

How does the person’s leadership approach account for success or failure
in handling the crisis?

Requirements: The paper must be a minimum of 7 pages, lines are to be double spaced and words should appear in 12 point Times New Roman font. Your paper should be appropriately cited throughout using APA format. Pay close attention to grammar, spelling and usage. Also rely heavily on Northouse to guide your analysis.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR FIRST PAPER: Choose an individual in a position of power (preferably within New York City local government) and analyze their leadership style(s), in accordance to the theories (Trait Approach, Authentic Leadership, etc.) covered in class. How is that style utilized? Identify specific plans or procedures they implemented that reflected on their leadership style? Were they successful or unsuccessful? How much, if any, of the organization’s success or failure is directly correlated to the change in leadership? (Prove their success or failure with quantitative research). These questions are designed to help you get started but your research must show in-depth analysis of your topic. Email me with any questions or concerns.

Leadership Paper guidelines

1. Introduction: State the paper research statement (What is your paper about? What does the literature say?)
2. Body: An in-depth examination of the problem/issue, literature you have read, what data is available and what it tells you or how you will explain it.
3. References: list all sources you used for the paper. At least 4 (four) journal articles MUST BE used for the paper, newspaper information is OK BUT NOT SUFFICIENT
4. Paper length: 7-8 pages (Cover page and references DO NOT count), double-spaced.
5. Cover page: must include your name, the class name and section, my name, and importantly, your research statement

You MUST get your individual approved by me. If anyone submits a paper not approved, it will receive an automatic F.

I do not accept papers that do not follow the APA style (if there is 14 font size and not 12; if there are gaps between paragraph more than double space; if you do not cite sources used; if there is no title page and your name; if spell check not used, etc…)
