The purpose of the assignment is to learn how to connect with your elected officials and remain civically engaged at the local level while solving national
security problems. The assignment fulfills Learning Objectives 3 and 4 in the syllabus (provided to you in the as a PDF file).
Think about the community in which you live in. Identify a problem that is or has the potential to be a threat to national security.
(You write about Knoxville, Tennessee as the community where I live).
Write a letter to your U.S. Representative explaining the problem. In your explanation, provide a detailed level of research to your problem and solution. Your
report should be only four (4) paragraphs long and should follow the format below. A Template Letter (Sample Letter to Elected Officials) is also provided for
you to consult.
• Paragraph 1 – Provides a clear and brief introduction to the problem.
• Paragraph 2 – Provides a well-researched history of the problem.
• Paragraph 3 – Demonstrates how the threat is or has the potential to be a security threat.
• Paragraph 4 – Proposes a research-informed solution to the problem.
Submission Instructions:
The assignment is single-spaced written with topic sentence paragraphs and submitted as a word document with 11-pt Times New Roman font. The assignment
will be graded according to the evaluation criteria specified in the grading rubric.
