The article attached with discussed the approach of various countries to the COVID 19 pandemic. It specifically points out that liberal democracies in Europe may have had difficulty taking firm actions because of their political system in comparison with China that is authoritarian.
After reading the article summarize the main points: explain the main idea (as above) and then using the article and your own research explore other possibilities to explain what may have caused such disastrous consequences for the European populations. In order to help you formulate the answer please look into the following points.
1. Research Korea and Japan – what are their political systems, what was the approach to the pandemic, was it successful and why? Was the political system at play or maybe something else?
2. Research the step by step response to the pandemic formulated by the British government: the UK had more time than mainland Europe to prepare for the virus, was the response adequate or not and why?
3. Compare the culture of Asian vs. European countries – do you think that maybe the culture helps explain the differences in outcomes?
4. Iran is an authoritarian country, however, its response was particularly poor: what caused such inefficiency?
5. Look at the response of federal states like the US: do you think that federations can be slower/ faster in responding?
6. What about the size of the country and the number of the population?
These questions are just to make you think of ideas.
Your essay, however, should be written as a well-structured answer to the main question: “Explain the reasons why some countries were more efficient than others in tackling the COVID 19 pandemic? Is the political system part of the answer?”
