Most of us are familiar with the moral arguments against slavery, but are likely unfamiliar with the Southern arguments for slavery. Read over the three primary sources posted for this week, compiled in the posted file A Defense of Slavery. In your own words, explain the main points of all three authors, Dew, Calhoun, and Fitzhugh. According to each of them, how did Southerners justify slavery? Be sure to cover all three equally.
As you read these, you will likely notice that these arguments are racist, pick and choose aspects of Christianity to focus on while ignoring others, and utilize pseudo-scientific thinking (based on racist ideology) which of course has been shown to be untrue. You do not need to tell me what you think of these sources – hopefully you find them all horrifying, stupid, and unreasonable. Instead, you’re providing a simple summary of their points to show me you read them and understood them.
