Assignment Instructions: Investigate all of the memorials listed below and consider them through form and content.
What is each memorial representing (context/history)? How does each on do this? What types of symbols, imagery,
architectural elements are used and to what effect? Are the memorials successful? How does each contribute to our
sense of American identity?
• Korean Veterans War Memorial (specifically the statues and wall)
• Manzanar National Historic Site
• Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
• Vietnam Memorial (including the controversy over its creation)
• 9/11 Memorial
