Write an essay on working class life and labour movements in Alberta.
This essay should be based on Working People in Alberta: A History by Alvin Finkel. This is not a book review; you need to craft your own line of arguments. The book should provide you with ideas and facts to hammer out your arguments; once this is done, organize and support your arguments with empirical facts. Researching other materials that speak to the essay topic is an option but not a must.
Your essay should address the following facets:
How did the composition of the labour force change in terms of available jobs and in terms of the groups of workers (male/female, Canadian/immigrant, white/coloured, skilled/unskilled) doing these jobs?
Did union memberships reflect the changing composition of the labour force?
Why did pro-labour parties gain little traction in electoral politics? Is there anything such parties can do outside parliament and government?
