Write an essay about the similarities and differences in the development of labour movements in different parts of Canada.
This essay doesn’t require new readings. What it requires, though, is that you review the notes on all previous course readings and assignments for this course. Based on that review, you need to identify the main developments of labour movements in Canada and then look at provincial variations. The best way to start is probably Craig Heron’s book The Canadian Labour Movement: A Short History, as he writes about the Canadian labour movement by drawing on specific regional occurrences from across the country. For your provincial variations, you should mainly draw on the books by Frank, Patrias and Savage, and Finkel. However you’d like to proceed, you must clearly distinguish between the similarities and differences of labour movement developments across the country.
Obviously, three provinces (in one case just a region within a province) aren’t representative of all variations existing coast-to-coast. They just give a hint that such differences exist. If you know something about a province or territory not covered in this course, or want to make the effort of serious independent research, go for it.
Some independent research is required anyhow: beyond the textbooks used in the course, this paper should draw on six other sources, be they books or journal articles. A good starting point for your research is the “Further Readings and Materials” PDF found in the “Resources: General, Research, and Writing” link on the course home page. Additionally, Drawn to Change: The Histories of Working-Class Struggle and the books by Heron and Finkel also include bibliographies offering useful sources you may like to use. And, of course, there is the AU Library .
