A Tale of Two Revolutions

In a relatively short time period (1776–1789) America and France underwent violent revolutions. There are plenty of linkages between the countries (Yorktown, Thomas Paine, Lafayette, etc…), but the path of their revolutions is quite different and they have very different outcomes. Indeed, by the end of the French Revolution, America and France treat each other as enemies. Why did this happen? Which factors led to the French Revolution? The American Revolution? Are there more similarities or differences between these efforts? How do we explain the emergence of Napoleon in France, but no similar dictator in America?
