• Why does Frederick Douglass choose to use a narrative to explain the evils of slavery? How does this prove his points? Is this similar to the way Jefferson uses the problems with the government of England?

Specific Essay #2 criteria:
must be at least 800 words, have a complete MLA works cited page with at least 2 primary sources used and cited internally and at least 1 outside secondary academic source used and cited internally. Note: Essay must be submitted via NSOnline only.
Possible primary sources from A World of Ideas eligible for this essay:
• One primary source must be one of the following:
o Jefferson, Emerson, Wollstonecraft, Douglass, the Friedmans, and/or Reich
o You may have both primary sources from this list, or you may bring in one previous reading assignment
• Secondary Academic source
o May be an essay from A World of Ideas that we have not covered in class (eligible for your extra journal entry too)
o Any outside research must be from a credible, academic source.
Grammar: Use standard spelling, grammar, and diction. Proofread for errors. Your essay should be written in third person (he, she, it, they, and them). There should be no use of first person pronouns (I, me, my) or second person pronouns (you and your) in this essay. Your essay must contain a clear and concise thesis statement. Points should be presented in topic sentences that relate back to the thesis.
MLA Formatting Requirements:
• Typed
• MLA heading and header format
• Double spaced format
• Indent every paragraph (do not space between paragraphs)
• Title Centered (no worries about a title, essay number will be accepted)
• 12 point font only
• Times New Roman font only
• Length: 800 words
• Proper internal citations and a works cited page, in MLA format, are required. No essay may pass without either of these.

Note: As long as it fits the essay criteria, you may create your own topic.
• Explore the similarities between the writings of Wollstonecraft and Douglass. How do they apply to our modern world?
• Do the economic theories of the Friedmans and Reich reach a similar conclusion? Explain.
• Why does Frederick Douglass choose to use a narrative to explain the evils of slavery? How does this prove his points? Is this similar to the way Jefferson uses the problems with the government of England?
• Does Mary Wollstonecraft basically use Jefferson’s argument of “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”? How does she extend it to women? Explain.
• Do the theories of Howard Gardner work with either Douglass or Wollstonecraft?
• Explore the problems with modern education, government, or society. How do our authors relate to them?
